Maritime Originals was founded around 25 years ago by director Richard Cosby, a naval captain who served for 37 years in the Royal Navy. The dealership specialises in oil paintings, watercolours and etchings of the maritime scene (mostly warships). Works date from 1900 to the present day, the earlier period of which is considered to be when the Royal Navy and the British Merchant Fleet were at their most spectacular, far-flung and impressive. The subjects of the collection include dreadnought battleships, battle squadrons, destroyers, battle cruisers, royal yachts, fleet reviews, submarines and cruisers.  A substantial part of the Maritime Originals collection is thus composed of images of the Great War (1914-18), many of which are new to the market with Maritime Originals and provide a valuable historical record. The gallery stocks a range of artists, with works by names such as WL Wyllie and Frank Watson Wood. Such figures are well-known within marine artists' circles and can found in public collections such as the Imperial War Museum and National Maritime Museum.
